The Team
Initially the co-hosts were Tony Garcia and Martin Andrade. Both are University of Minnesota Graduates. Tony graduated with a Political Science major, Marty with a Psychology major. They recruited the assistance of Tom "the Bomb" as producer and board operator.
Tony is a state's rights Philosophical theist and Marty originally established himself as Catholic conservative, but later switched to the protestant position. Marty tries to be the bridge maker between factions of conservatives while Tony feels no need to alter his beliefs simply for acceptance of party members.
The show started with the main premise that there are many issues which cause disagreements within the right-wing. Tony and Marty often had differing views on those issues and cause a very enlightening dialogue on those topics. They also view themselves as the place "where rational thought and common sense are disguised as entertainment."
Some of the staff and team members are Tommy Huynh was one of the creative consultants and the board operator/producer, Bruce (Da Bruceman) (replaced Tommy in May 2006) and has been instrumental in some of the creational additions to the show and ThePete (joined the team in August 2005) is a researcher.
Getting Started
Race to the Right started as a radio show on KYCR AM 1570 (Patriot II--Eagan, MN) in September 2004 running every other Sunday from 2PM - 4PM for 9 shows.
The show interviewed Gerry Daly (polling expert and nationally recognized blogger) of DalyThoughts.com, Michael Badnarik (2004 Libertarian Party Presidential Candidate), David Dayhoff (Minneapolis School Board Candidate), Coleen Rowley (Time Person of the Year 2002), FBI Special Agent Paul McCabe, and Minnesota gubernatorial candidate Sue Jeffers.
In April 2005 the show was given 2 hours on the Talk Station, AM 1500 KSTP (Minneapolis-Saint Paul) on a show called the Next Big Thing.
Shortly after that Dan "the Ox" Ochsner, station manager of NewsTalk 1450 KNSI (St Cloud, MN) gave the RttR show the green light to begin their run as a regular weekly show on KNSI. On July 31, 2005 Race to the Right began on Sundays from 1PM - 3PM.
RttR started quickly by interviewing all 5 Republican candidates for Minnesota's 6th Congressional District and FBI Special Agent Paul McCabe for their 9/11 show. They have since interviewed many of the major canidadates within various political races in Minnesota. These include Senate candidates Ford Bell, Harold Shudlick, Mark Kennedy, John Uldrich, Secretary of State candidates Christian Sande, Bruce Kennedy and Mark Ritchie and Minnesota state Auditor Patricia Anderson. Prominent radio personalities King Banaian and Mitch Berg have also appeared on the show. Some other non-politicians interviewed were best-selling author Vince Flynn, Trans-Siberian Orchestra's Al Pitrelli and Dan Cohen (author of Anonymous Source).
Duo Become Solo
Marty quit the show on September 29, 2006 because of personal reasons.<ref>Template:Cite web</ref>"This week, it became clear to me that I would need to start treating the radio show as a part-time job to even be allowed anything above a minor role in the show. Well, it wasn't a hard decision to leave at that point, especially since my latest job would have me working on Fridays and Saturdays.
I was simply not enjoying doing radio anymore. It had become a chore. An expensive, time consuming chore. You have to enjoy something a lot and have fun doing it to make the time and money feel like a worthwhile activity."
